“Samourai” by Hermès’ artist, Zoe Pauwels. It was issued as part of the Hermès’ 1991 Spring/Summer collection, and has never been reissued.
Pauwel’s design depicts a mounted Japanese samourai warrior. From the 1991 Spring/Summer Hermès scarf booklet: "Every country satisfies our desire for the picturesque with one symbolic figure, as does the English gentleman or the Spanish toreador, the Samourai has great meaning for us. The one who rides here belongs to the virile age when the Tokugawa lords reigned over ancient Tokyo. He is surrounded by four maewa (the front part of the saddle), dating from the height of the Shogun era. Let's salute this warrior with all the respect that prudence demands."
